The Gili Islands are three small islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, one and a half to two and a half hours by fast boat from Bali. White sand, reef straight off the beach, and no motorised transport of any kind. Getting around means walking, cycling, or taking a cidomo, the local horse cart.

They are not in Bali, and that distinction matters more than the map suggests.

Choosing your island

The three are genuinely different and picking wrong shapes the whole week.

Gili Trawangan is the largest and the liveliest, with bars, dive shops, and a night that keeps going. Good for a young guest list, less good if you wanted quiet.

Gili Meno is the smallest and the quietest, close to empty in places. It is the honeymoon island, and for an elopement or a wedding of ten people it is extraordinary.

Gili Air sits between the two, with decent restaurants, a relaxed pace, and enough infrastructure to host a group. It is the one we suggest most often for a wedding party.

Where you can marry here

What is different about planning here

Three things. First, the crossing: boats from Bali take up to two and a half hours and can be cancelled in weather, so everyone comes over a day early with a buffer.

Second, the vendor pool. This is Lombok, not Bali. Some suppliers travel across with us and some are local, and either way the logistics are heavier than a mainland wedding. Everything from chairs to flowers arrives by boat and then by cart.

Third, the legal side. Civil registration here goes through Lombok rather than Bali, with its own process and timing. Most couples marry legally elsewhere and hold a symbolic ceremony on the islands, which is simpler and gives you complete freedom over what the ceremony actually is.

If you are comparing the islands with the mainland coasts, the region by region guide covers the trade-offs, and the price simulator will account for the extra travel.

Good to know

No cars, at all

The Gilis ban motorised transport. You get around on foot, by bicycle, or in a cidomo horse cart, and the silence that creates is the single thing every visitor mentions first.

Three islands, three moods

Trawangan is the big one with the nightlife, Meno is the quiet one couples honeymoon on, and Air sits between them with restaurants and calm. Choosing the right one decides the whole feel of your wedding.

The clearest water in the region

White sand and reef straight off the beach, with turtles that are genuinely easy to find. For a wedding week where guests need something to do, the snorkelling does a lot of work.

A different province, and it matters

The Gilis belong to Lombok and West Nusa Tenggara, not Bali. That changes the boat logistics, the vendor pool, and, for a legal marriage, which civil office you deal with.

Common questions

Are the Gilis part of Bali?+

No. They sit off the northwest coast of Lombok, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. Practically, that means a one and a half to two and a half hour boat from Bali, a different vendor pool, and different civil registration if you want the marriage to be legal here rather than symbolic.

Which island should we choose?+

Gili Trawangan if you want bars, restaurants, and a night that goes on. Gili Meno if you want near-silence and empty beach. Gili Air if you want something in between, which is what we recommend to most wedding groups.

How do guests get around?+

On foot, by bicycle, or by cidomo, the small horse cart. There are no cars or scooters. It is charming and it is worth knowing in advance if any of your guests have mobility difficulties, because a cidomo over sand is not a comfortable ride.

How long is the boat from Bali?+

One and a half to two and a half hours on a fast boat, depending on the departure point and the sea. Crossings can be cancelled in bad weather. We build a buffer day and favour the dry season from May to September.

Can we get legally married on the Gilis?+

It is possible and it is administered through Lombok rather than Bali, which changes the process and the timings. Most couples we plan for marry legally at home or in Bali and hold a commitment ceremony on the islands. The guide to marrying legally in Indonesia explains the requirements.
