Lombok sits one island east of Bali, 25 minutes away by plane, and it is the answer we give couples who love the idea of Bali but wince at the crowds. The beaches are long and quiet, Mount Rinjani stands behind everything, and the coastline still looks the way Bali’s did before the beach clubs arrived.

It is not Bali, and that is the point. The island is Sasak and largely Muslim, the nights are quieter, and outside a few pockets there is very little built for tourism. What Lombok offers a wedding is space: whole bays with nobody on them, resorts that feel unhurried, and prices a notch below the equivalent across the strait.

Where weddings happen on Lombok

The northwest is the established corner. The Sire and Medana peninsula, facing the Gilis, holds the island’s flagship resorts with lawns, chapels, and proper event teams, and the Senggigi and Mangsit coast just south of it adds a string of beachfront boutique hotels built around sunset.

The south coast is the wilder, more photogenic one. Around Selong Belanak and Kuta Lombok, horseshoe bays of white sand sit between rounded green hills, and a handful of hilltop villas look down over the whole scene. This is where we send couples chasing a barefoot day or an elopement with real drama in the backdrop.

What we plan around

Vendors first. Lombok’s own wedding scene is small, so for a styled day we usually bring key vendors from Bali: photographer, florist, sometimes the celebrant. The flight is short and the logistics are routine for us, but it belongs in the budget from the start, and our guide to the real cost of a Bali wedding explains how those lines behave.

Guest flow second. Most guests treat a Lombok wedding as a two-stop trip with Bali. We plan arrivals around the flight schedule, and for smaller groups the fast boat via the Gili Islands turns the journey into part of the holiday.

Respect for local custom third. Ceremonies and parties run differently in a Muslim-majority place: music curfews are taken seriously in village areas, and Fridays carry weight. The resorts handle all of this smoothly on their own land, and we handle it everywhere else.

Indonesian marriage law applies on Lombok exactly as it does on Bali, so nearly all our international couples keep the ceremony symbolic and sign at home. Our guide on getting married in Bali legally covers the trade-off; the answer does not change across the strait.

Good to know

Bali's beaches, twenty years ago

Lombok's coastline delivers what many couples picture when they say Bali: long empty sand, clear water, and no beach clubs pressing in. The south coast bays around Selong Belanak are some of the most beautiful in Indonesia and remain almost private.

A real luxury pocket in the northwest

The Sire and Medana peninsula holds the island's serious resorts, with the Gilis on the horizon and calm reef water in front. It is a genuine alternative to Nusa Dua for a resort wedding, at gentler prices and with far fewer people.

Closer than it feels

The flight from Bali takes about 25 minutes and lands at a modern airport. A wedding on Lombok stays perfectly practical for guests basing themselves in Bali, and combines naturally with a Gili Islands stay.

A different island culture

Lombok is predominantly Sasak and Muslim rather than Balinese Hindu, so the rhythm of the island differs: quieter nights, different ceremonies, and its own crafts and food. We plan around local custom with the same care we apply to the banjar in Bali.

Common questions

How do we and our guests get to Lombok?+

Fly from Bali in 25 to 30 minutes, with multiple flights daily into Lombok International Airport near Praya, or take a fast boat from Padangbai or Serangan. For a wedding we usually put guests on the plane: it is quick, cheap, and immune to sea conditions.

Which part of Lombok is best for a wedding?+

For a full resort wedding, the northwest: the Sire and Medana peninsula and the Senggigi coast hold the established hotels with event teams. For a hilltop villa or barefoot beach day, the south around Selong Belanak and Kuta. We match the coast to the wedding you want.

Is a wedding on Lombok legally binding?+

The rules are the same as everywhere in Indonesia, so most international couples hold a symbolic ceremony on Lombok and sign the papers at home. If you want the marriage registered in Indonesia, we arrange it, and the process is identical to Bali's.

Is Lombok cheaper than Bali?+

Venue for venue, usually yes. The luxury resorts price below their Bali equivalents, villas and vendors cost less, and the trade-off is a smaller vendor pool: the photographers, florists, and planners you shortlist may travel from Bali, which adds transport rather than removes savings on a big day.

When is the best season?+

May to October is the dry season, the same window as Bali. The south coast stays a touch drier than the north. July and August book the resorts out first, and the shoulder months of May, June, and September are the sweet spot.
