Uluwatu is the piece of Bali people picture when they imagine a clifftop wedding: white limestone dropping 50 to 90 metres into the Indian Ocean, glass chapels on the edge, and a sunset that arrives straight in front of you. It sits on the Bukit peninsula, the dry southern tip of the island, which looks and feels different to everywhere else in Bali.
Why couples pick the Bukit
The drama is real and it is not a photography trick. The cliffs here genuinely tower, the water is a deep blue rather than the grey-green of the north coast, and the peninsula is arid and open instead of jungled. For a cliff and ocean wedding there is nowhere better on the island.
The other reason is the light. Uluwatu faces west. That single fact is what separates it from Sanur or Nusa Dua, where the sun rises over the water and sets behind you. Here the ceremony, the portraits, and the first drink all happen facing the sunset.

The chapels deserve their own mention. The Bukit has more of them than the rest of Bali put together, and they solve the one real problem with an outdoor ceremony in the tropics: a chapel wedding keeps the view and takes rain and wind out of the equation.
Wind is worth taking seriously up here. The cliff is exposed, and Bali’s windiest months run from May to October, exactly the months most couples pick for the weather. The best time to get married in Bali covers what that does to an outdoor ceremony and how we build around it.
What we plan around
Wind, first. The cliff edge is exposed in the afternoon, which affects everything from your hair to whether your guests can hear the vows. We use weighted structures, lapel microphones, and florals chosen to hold together.
Second, the heat and the steps. Bukit venues tend to be built down the cliff, and a set of stairs in the afternoon sun is hard on older guests. We plan shade, water, and where necessary a shorter route for the people who need it.
Third, the drive. Uluwatu is 45 minutes to an hour from the airport and a similar run from Seminyak or Canggu, so if your guests are staying elsewhere, the transfers need thinking about rather than leaving to them.

Uluwatu sits on the limestone edge of the Bukit peninsula, with the Indian Ocean straight below and nothing between you and the horizon. No other part of Bali gives you that drop.
West-facing, so the light works
The sun sets into the water in front of you rather than behind a hill. A ceremony timed for around five puts the whole thing in golden light and the sunset behind your first kiss.
Glass chapels, several of them
The Bukit has more purpose-built wedding chapels than anywhere else on the island, most of them glass-walled and pointed at the ocean, which means a covered ceremony that keeps the view.
Wind is the trade-off
Cliff edges are exposed. We plan the veil, the hair, the florals, and the sound system around it, because an unweighted arch on the Uluwatu edge is a genuine problem.

Common questions
What time should an Uluwatu ceremony start?+
Around four thirty to five. Sunset in Bali lands between roughly six and six thirty all year, and you want the ceremony finished with time for portraits while the light is still gold. Starting at three means squinting into hard overhead sun in every photograph.
Is it windy on the cliff?+
Often, and more so in the afternoon. It is not a reason to avoid Uluwatu, but it does change the plan: weighted structures, a hairstyle that survives it, a lapel mic rather than a handheld, and florals that will not shred. We build all of that in.
How long is the drive from the airport?+
Usually 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes more on a Friday. It is one of the easier runs in south Bali because most of it avoids Denpasar. We arrange the guest transfers so nobody is negotiating with a driver on arrival.
Can we hold the reception on the cliff too?+
Most Bukit venues run the ceremony at the edge and the dinner further back on the property, which is sensible: the edge is spectacular and cold once the sun goes and the wind picks up. We plan the move so it feels like part of the evening.
Is Uluwatu good for a large wedding?+
It can be, but the clifftop spots themselves are usually the smallest part of a venue. Many hold 40 to 80 at the edge and more at the reception. If your list is over a hundred, we will point you at a resort or hotel wedding with a lawn rather than a cliff platform.
