Santai Hotel Amed is a small beachfront hotel at Bunutan, on the southern end of the Amed coast in east Bali. Ten bungalows and four suites in Toraja-style wooden cottages, with layered straw roofs, sit in a planted garden of frangipani, bougainvillea and coconut palms, with a pool in the middle, the Coconut Restaurant on one side and Mount Agung rising behind.
Weddings here happen in the garden rather than on the sand. The photographs the hotel has published show a palm-leaf and orchid arch, a petal aisle between the cottages, a reception table under the trees and a coconut cake, which is about the right scale for this coast. The beach is a few metres from the ocean-view bungalows if you want the black sand and the fishing boats in frame instead.
We treat Santai as a match for a party of around 25 who take the whole hotel for a few days, marry in the garden late in the afternoon and shoot portraits the next morning when Agung is clearest. Most Amed properties sell you the sea and leave it there. Santai is planted: frangipani, bougainvillea and coconut palms around thatched Toraja-style cottages, which means a ceremony has a backdrop even at midday when the black sand is at its harshest.
Agung sits right behind it
The hotel faces the water with the volcano behind the gardens, and in the first hours of the day it fills the frame. We time ceremonies here for late afternoon and portraits for the following morning, which is when this stretch of coast is at its best.
