Tabanan is the regency west of Canggu, where the development thins out and Bali turns back into farmland. Rice terraces run inland towards the mountains, a black-sand coast takes the surf on the other side, and Tanah Lot sits on its rock in between. It is an hour to ninety minutes from the airport.
What you get here
Space. The south of Bali is full, and Tabanan is not. Venues here sit in their own land with fields around them, which means no neighbouring construction in your photographs, no music from the villa next door, and a level of privacy that is now hard to buy further south.
You also get the two landscapes Bali is famous for within a short drive of each other: the terraced paddy inland, and the open ocean coast.

Tanah Lot, realistically
You cannot hold a wedding on the temple rock. It is an active Hindu site and it is mobbed at sunset. What you can do is marry along the same coastline, which is beautiful, and go to the temple for portraits at a time we choose rather than when the tour buses do.
The trade-off
There is very little wedding infrastructure out here. Your florist, your hair and makeup artist, the caterer, and every chair and glass will travel from the south, and each of those carries a transport charge.
None of that is a reason to avoid Tabanan. It is a reason to build the travel into the budget from the first quote rather than finding it at the end. Good to know
Rice terraces and ocean in one place
Tabanan is the only part of Bali where you can hold a ceremony with paddy behind you and the sea in front. The Jatiluwih terraces inland are a UNESCO site and the coast is twenty minutes from them.
Tanah Lot
The sea temple on its rock is the most photographed spot on the island and the sunset behind it is the reason. You cannot marry on the rock itself, but the coastline around it is spectacular and far less crowded than the temple car park suggests.
Room to breathe
This is farmland. Venues here sit in their own space with no neighbouring development, which is close to impossible in the south now, and it means real privacy and real quiet.
Vendors travel in
There is little wedding infrastructure locally, so florists, hair and makeup, catering, and rentals all come up from the south. It works, and it carries a transport cost that belongs in the budget from the start.

Common questions
Can we get married at Tanah Lot?+
Not on the temple rock itself, which is an active place of worship. What you can do is marry at a venue along the same stretch of coast with the temple in view or a short drive away, and take portraits there. We arrange the timing so you are not in the sunset crowd.
What is the beach like?+
Black volcanic sand and a fairly serious surf on much of this coast. It is dramatic rather than swimmable. If you want a beach your guests can wade into, the south or the east suits better.
Is it far from everything?+
It is an hour to ninety minutes from the airport and about the same from Seminyak, so it is not remote, but it is not walkable to anything either. Guests need transport arranged, and there is no strip of restaurants to wander to in the evening.
Why do the rice terraces matter?+
They are the backdrop most couples come to Bali for and cannot find in the south, where the paddies have largely been built over. Jatiluwih is a working UNESCO landscape rather than a viewpoint, and it is genuinely beautiful in the late afternoon.
Is it good for a large wedding?+
Better than the highlands or the islands. There are estates and villas here with real space, and the flat coastal land takes a marquee well. The constraint is accommodation: there are fewer rooms nearby than in the south, so a big guest list may need to spread out.
