NIHI Sumba
Beachfront luxury resort, Wanokaka
Photos: NIHI Sumba
NIHI Sumba is the property that turned Sumba into a destination, and it is still the one we reach for when a couple wants the wedding to feel like an expedition. It sits on 2.5 kilometres of private beach at Nihiwatu in Wanokaka, west Sumba, about 90 minutes by road from Tambolaka airport and one short flight from Bali. Twenty-eight villas, a resident herd of horses on the sand, a left-hand surf break out front, and almost nobody else for miles.
Ceremonies happen on the beach, on the clifftop above the ocean, in the rainforest behind, and in the gardens and private villa terraces. Nihioka, the clifftop spa site reached along the coast, is the setting most couples end up choosing. Receptions move to Ombak, the sandy-floored restaurant on its deck over the water, or to Nio Beach Club for dinner and a bonfire on the sand. A village priest can lead a Sumbanese blessing with betel nut in place of rings, and the resort will bring in ceremonial garments, dancers, and a procession of horses or water buffalo.
The published ceiling for a celebration is 70 adults across 36 rooms, which makes this a buyout property in practice: the guest list and the room block are the same conversation. NIHI puts no wedding prices in public at all, so venue, catering, styling and rooms are quoted for your dates and numbers. We collect that quote in writing and reconfirm availability with the resort before anything is committed.

Why we love it
The buyout is the whole idea
NIHI caps a celebration at 70 adults across 36 rooms, and honestly that is how the place works best. Take the property and for those days the beach, the horses, the surf break and the staff belong to your group and nobody else.
A Sumbanese ceremony done properly
A village priest leads the blessing, with betel nut chewing in place of rings. Add Sumbanese wedding garments, a procession of horses or water buffalo, and fire dancers, and the day belongs to the island rather than to a template.
Nothing is on a rate card
NIHI publishes no wedding prices at all. Everything is quoted for your dates, your numbers and the season, so the first real conversation covers budget rather than a fixed package. We set that expectation early, before you have fallen for the place.

Common questions
Can you get married at NIHI Sumba?+
Yes. NIHI runs celebrations from the smallest ceremony for two up to a full resort buyout, with a dedicated events coordinator, in-house catering and built ceremony settings on the beach, the clifftop and in the gardens. We handle the legal side and the schedule around it.
How many guests can NIHI take?+
The resort's published maximum for a celebration is 70 adults across 36 rooms. Beds are the constraint rather than space, so the guest list and the room block are really the same question here. We build the two together before anything is confirmed.
How much does a wedding at NIHI Sumba cost?+
NIHI does not publish wedding prices, venue fees or packages. Everything is quoted for your dates, guest count and season, and rooms sit on top of the event costs. Expect the top of the Indonesian range, and let us collect a current written quote rather than working from a number you found online.
How do we get there, and how far is it?+
Fly Bali to Tambolaka in west Sumba, roughly 50 minutes, then about 90 minutes by road to the resort. Planes are small and go a few times a day, so for a wedding group we block seats well ahead and build arrival days rather than arrival times into the schedule.
