Lelewatu sits high on a clifftop at Wanokaka on the south coast of west Sumba, around ten hectares of ground with 27 villas built in the tall peaked-roof style of Sumbanese clan houses. Carved timber, thatch, ikat on the beds and the tables, and open Indian Ocean from almost every angle. It looks like Sumba rather than like a resort that could be anywhere.
Weddings here are small by design. The resort’s own events page frames them as intimate and puts Bakosawu, the cliffside restaurant and bar under its high thatched roof, at 30 to 40 seated. Ceremonies go on the clifftop with the sea behind, drinks move to the infinity pool terrace, and dinner runs at long tables at Bakosawu as the light goes. The sunset deck built out over the slope is where we put the private dinner for two, either the night before or the night after.
Getting there is the trade-off: roughly an hour and a half by road from Tambolaka, longer than most of the island’s other options. Lelewatu does not publish wedding prices, so venue, catering and rooms come as a quote for your date and numbers, and we reconfirm current figures with the resort before anything is committed.

Sumbanese architecture, not imported resort style
The villas carry the tall peaked roofs of Sumbanese clan houses, with carved timber, ikat textiles and thatch throughout. It reads as belonging to the island rather than being dropped onto it, and it photographs like nowhere else in Indonesia.
A clifftop that does the work
The property sits high above the Indian Ocean on around ten hectares, so nearly every space faces open water. A ceremony on the lawn above the drop needs a chuppah and chairs and nothing else.

Lelewatu describes its wedding offer as intimate and puts Bakosawu at 30 to 40 people. We would not fight that number. With 27 villas the resort suits a group that takes most of the property and stays several nights.
