A pre-wedding shoot is a session we plan almost weekly, especially for couples from across Asia, where it is as much a part of getting married as the cake. Bali earns its reputation as the place to do it. The galleries that come out well, though, are built on route planning: light, distances, and how much energy two people in nice clothes actually have.
Pair the locations to a mood
The island splits into moods, and a strong session commits to one or two of them.
Soft and green means the rice terraces and jungle around Ubud: layered hills and morning haze. Dramatic means the raw cliffs and coves of Nusa Penida, which cost you a boat crossing and a full day but hand back coastline that looks like another planet. Ceremonial means the temple gates of east Bali around Karangasem, the silhouette shot half the internet knows. Classic means sunset sand on the west coast.
What we talk couples out of is chasing all four in one session. Bali looks compact on a map, but each of those moods sits an hour or more from the next, and the hours in a car show on your faces by the third stop.
Build the day around two windows
Near the equator, the light is kind for about an hour after sunrise and two hours before sunset, and harsh for most of the day in between. Sunrise is the underrated window: the famous sites are close to empty at 6.30am, the air is cool, and hair and makeup survive. Late afternoon brings warmer tones and easier wake-up calls.
A good half-day session is one window and two locations close together. A full day, sunrise to sunset with a long rest in the middle, is what it takes to cover two moods properly.
Outfits, and where you change
Two or three outfits is the sweet spot. One flowing piece, because fabric that moves photographs beautifully in coastal wind. One simpler look for the green locations. Traditional dress if it matters to you; it often makes the strongest frame of the day.
We plan the changing points into the route: the car, a villa, a cafe we know along the way. Ten minutes hunting for a bathroom at golden hour is ten minutes of the best light gone. Drones, fees, and rules at the famous sites
The iconic locations are working temples, village land, or protected coastline, and each keeps its own rules. Some charge entrance and photography fees. Some restrict or ban drones. Sacred sites expect shoulders covered between frames and a certain quiet from the crew.
We check the current rules for every stop on your route and arrange access in advance, so the session never opens with a negotiation at a ticket booth.
Before the wedding, or after it
Most pre-wedding sessions happen a few days before the ceremony or on a separate trip entirely. For couples marrying here, the day-before session doubles as practice: you learn how you both move in front of a camera before the day that counts. Our elopement couples often fold a session into the same week for exactly that reason.
The post-wedding version is the relaxed one. Shot on the honeymoon, already married, with no schedule pressing, it regularly produces the most natural photographs of the whole trip. Sunrise on a quiet beach with two days of sleep behind you beats a tight wedding-morning slot every time.
